Examples of area-rug bindings

So, you are in your new custom home and love it. Congratulations on the move! Lots of your old stuff works, but you have additional space—and want to have fun doing a little home decoration—and need some new floor coverings. Well, a great foundation is an area rug, which can really define a space and be the perfect finishing touch—without breaking the bank.

A bedroom with patterned carpet

When looking for an area rug, remember that there are some easy ways to make it feel and look custom. First off, measure the room and make the rug the right size. Typically you should have the rug be 12 to 18 inches off every wall and consistent all the way around. Next, consider your options for finishing the edges of the carpet. You can use a thin binding that matches the carpet color, or you can use fabric that matches the upholstery in the room. There are so many great options. (If you want to make it feel really custom, be creative when doing the binding.)

An area rug made of sisal

Where your rug is being placed can help determine what type of material to use. For a formal area, consider using a sea grass or sisal. These natural-fiber carpets will enhance any decor and are extremely versatile. For living areas or bedrooms, use a soft carpet with a pattern or a texture. There are so many great looks out there that will finish a room beautifully, even turning a larger piece of carpet into an area rug. You can expect any of these styles of rug to cost between $250 up to $1,200.
